Murat Gassiev is set to sign with British promoter Eddie Hearn ahead of his move up to heavyweight.
The former WBA and IBF cruiserweight world champion lost his world titles to Oleksandr Usyk last July and has since undergone shoulder surgery to correct an injury which hampered him during that bout.
ow, the 25-year-old is ready to return to the ring and will be following in Usyk’s footsteps by signing with Hearn and moving up to heavyweight.
The promoter initially hinted at the deal in an interview with IFLTV, saying: “Couple of new signings. One heavyweight signing.
“No [he’s not American]. He’s a big name in boxing. He’s moving up to heavyweight.”
his prompted speculation that Gassiev would be joining the Matchroom stable.
It was later all but confirmed by Ring Magazine and FOX Sports journalist Mike Coppinger, who claims the Russian is expected to join on a multi-fight deal.
The signing will be part of Hearn and Matchroom USA’s deal to broadcast on streaming service DAZN in America – Gassiev’s fights will be shown on Sky Sports in the UK.
@MikeCoppinger “SOURCES: Murat Gassiev is expected to join DAZN on a multi-fight deal. The former cruiserweight titleholder hasn’t competed since he lost to Oleksandr Usyk in the WBSS finals in July. He’s talked about competing at heavyweight, and that’s where he makes sense for DAZN”
