Billy Joe Saunders is on the verge of signing a co-promotional agreement with Frank Warren and Bob Arum’s Top Rank, according to reports.
The 29-year-old is set to follow in long-time friend Tyson Fury’s footsteps, as the heavyweight announced a similar deal late last month.
Saunders was originally scheduled to move up to super-middleweight for his next bout, having turned down a mandatory shot at his old WBO middleweight belt against Demetrius Andrade.
However, a shambolic situation with the governing body saw him initially sanctioned for a vacant title fight against Shefat Isufi, only to then find out the original champion Gilberto Ramirez hadn’t vacated.
Zona ESPN analyst BarbosaBox now claims Billy Joe is finalising a multi-fight co-promotional deal in the US with Top Rank/ESPN working alongside his promoter Frank Warren.
Demetrius Andrade’s promoter Eddie Hearn hinted at this move on Saturday as when he was asked if Saunders could now move back down in weight and challenge Andrade, he replied: “No, too late.
“I expect him to sign with Top Rank and [Frank Warren’s] Queensberry.
“We spoke, I think they made a big mistake, big mistake.
“He was made a multi-fight offer by us to fight a warm-up fight, the mandatory against Andrade and then go on and fight a Canelo vs Jacobs winner or have a defence. Massive money.”
